What roast levels mean
Light, medium, dark – the roast level often decides more about the flavour in your cup than the origin does. It's the last big lever before the coffee reaches you.
Light
Roasted shorter and less hot, light brown, no oils on the surface. A light roast preserves acidity and origin aromas – often fruit, blossom or tea. This is where you taste most clearly where the coffee comes from. Popular for filter and in the specialty world.
Medium
Roasted a little longer, darker, more balanced. The acidity steps back while sweetness and body come through more strongly – caramel, nut, chocolate. The medium roast is the all-rounder that keeps origin and roast aromas in balance.
Dark
Roasted long, often glossy with oil. Bold, roasty and bitter-chocolatey; the origin recedes and the roast aromas take over. A classic for strong espresso and anyone who likes it intense.
