Geisha – the Bean of Record Prices
Hardly any coffee variety has caused as much stir as Geisha, also spelled «Gesha». It breaks price records at auction – and tastes so floral that many don’t take it for coffee at first.
Where it comes from
Originally from the Gesha forest in Ethiopia, the variety reached Central America by a roundabout route. It became famous from 2004, when a coffee from Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama astonished the specialty world.
Why so expensive
Geisha grows best at high altitude, yields little and is tricky to cultivate. Small quantity, high demand, extraordinary flavour – that drives the price. Top lots fetch four-figure sums per kilo at auction.
How it tastes
Intensely floral – jasmine, bergamot, orange blossom – with a tea-like lightness and lively acidity. Best as filter, so the delicate notes can shine. An experience worth trying at least once.
